“Those who teach the most about humanity aren’t always humans.”
– Donald I. Hicks
20 plus years ago, I was working in sales when I met Macey. I went to school for fashion merchandising art, a creative niche in retail, and started my career working on store layouts, staging, and displays to enhance the shopping experience. I loved it (and even won an award!)
That’s when Macey came into my life. Rescued from euthanasia and an abusive home, she needed a lot of work. Macey was terrified of the world. Literally. There was nothing that wouldn’t send this beautiful German Shepherd quaking and shaking and cowering into the floor. I wanted to help her so I got into dog training. I put her into sports to help build her confidence. She loved it. I loved it! And Macey went from the dog that nobody wanted to an award-winning sport dog and performer with an unshakable disposition.
At the same time, an OSPCA employeee noticed my hard work with Macey and my newest rescue Fidget. I stareted working with the SPCA as a “Meet Your Match” training manager. I spent several rewarding years teaching shelter staff across Ontario how to help potential adopters choose the right pet for their lifestyle. I found myself with a passion and talent for the pet industry.
Today, I’m the proud pet parent to some exceptional dogs, and an avid dog trainer and dog sports competitor. As for Macey, who taught me about true resilience and guided me to the things I love most, she lived the best part of her life in love and sport. Every year at Rocket Relay's tournament we honor her memory with the Macey Award, given to the rescue dog who best displays Macey’s love for the game, defied the odds, and excelled with its new owner.
